MMA was once a competition between martial arts and is now becoming a unique martial art of its own. Our MMA skills class honors the fusion of techniques from Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, and Jiu Jitsu.
Class starts with a wrestling style warm-up then moves to technique training. Each class focuses on a different set of MMA skills and, most importantly, the transitions between them. You can expect to learn to move seamlessly from clinch work to striking, grappling, and submissions. Class ends with an intense core strength workout. This is a great way to improve your all-around skills and master the transitions in between.
Boxing
Boxing is an ancient sport that dates back to Ancient Greece. In modern history, it was used to settle disputes between English men in the 18th century. Fortunately, boxing shook off its pugilistic appearance as it was adopted into universities and the armed forces. Shortly after, both professional and amateur rankings were established, and each produced its own local, national and international governing bodies and its own variation of the rules. Many MMA fighters include boxing in their routine as both a way to knock an opponent out or to wear down an opponent through multiple blows.
Muay Thai
Muay Thai, translated into English as Thai Boxing, is the national sport of Thailand. The Muay Thai style includes the use of punches, kicks, knees, elbows and clinching and is often referred to as the art of eight limbs. Training methods are designed to develop devastating speed and power, as well as to build excellent cardiovascular endurance. The speed and power of Muay Thai make it an exciting martial art for every MMA fighter.
Jiu Jitsu
Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that originated in Japan over 1000 years ago and has many sub styles that focus on different aspects of the art. However, all styles of Jiu Jitsu have these qualities in common: joint locking, throws, takedowns, submissions, chokes and grappling. The skills taught in Jiu Jitsu translate well into close-combat during an MMA fight.
Choy Li Fut
Choy Li Fut is an effective self defense system particularly noted for defense against multiple attackers. It contains a wide variety of techniques, including long and short range punches, kicks, sweeps and take downs, pressure point attacks, joint locks, and grappling.
Aikido
Aikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. This requires very little physical energy, as the aikidōka (aikido practitioner) "leads" the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks. Aikido can be categorized under the general umbrella of grappling arts.
Judo
Meaning "gentle way", is a modern Japanese martial art (gendai budō) and combat sport that originated in Japan in the late nineteenth century. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking the elbow or by executing a choke. From wrestling to MMA, Judo is a great art to learn, particularly for people who often find themselves at a size disadvantage.
Wing Chun
Wing Chun techniques emphasize practicality and efficiency to maintain its ideals on effectiveness. Strikes are intended to injure or disrupt the target. Efficiency in Wing Chun is based on the concept that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Likewise its primary targets all lie along the “centerline” of one's opponent.
